Whole School Athletics Day
We had a fantastic day on Friday, May 30 at Casey Fields Athletics Track for our annual House Athletics day. It was remarkable to see so many students participating and contributing not only to the athletic events, but also the other events hosted by our SRC Leaders. It was a great day where students represented their house with pride and our Year 12s enjoyed the traditional dress up. The enthusiasm demonstrated by the staff and students was a highlight of this event. A special thanks to the staff and student leaders that made the event so successful.

Congratulations to our winning house on the day – Acacia!

Future Leaders Camp
Students in the Year 9 Future Leaders class attended the outdoor education camp at Torquay: along Victoria’s surf coast. The weather was just about perfect for our campers. The team enjoyed the hikes each day getting up their steps with approximately 20,000 steps per person each day. The camping crew enjoyed each other’s company and enjoyed seeing what the great outdoors has to offer. I thank the staff who attended for giving up their own time to ensure that our Year 9’s would have a memorable experience away from school.

Attitudes To School Student Survey
I wish to thank all the students who completed the survey. The data collected from students provides valuable information on the areas where we as a school community are doing well as well as informing us on the areas for focused improvement.

The GAT
All students doing a VCE Unit 3/4 subject, a VCE-scored VET and all VCE VM students are required to sit the GAT on Tuesday June 17.  There will be no VCE and VCE VM classes on this day.  The GAT is a very important moderating tool as part of VCE assessments, especially if students have interrupted studies or miss exams later in the year.  Good luck to all of our students undertaking the GAT.

Winter Concert
This will be held on Wednesday 25 June starting at 6pm. The Winter Concert is a great opportunity for the music students to showcase their talents on a live stage. I encourage families and friends to attend.

Entrance is by gold coin donation and the Community Voice Team will be providing tea and coffee. As always there will be great raffle prizes on offer, so come along. Bookings are not required.

Assessment and Reporting Day
As previously communicated this coming Monday, June 16 is a student free day for our Assessment and Reporting Day where teachers will be completing the end of semester reports.

At the end of the term families have access (via Compass) to an end of semester report that is specific to their child. These reports provide students, teachers and parents/carers with a clear and concise picture of a student’s achievement and progress at a point in time.

Teachers make informed and consistent decisions about student progress against the Victorian Curriculum achievement standards (Years 7-10) or VCE outcomes (Year 11 & 12).

I encourage parents/carers to read the report and have a discussion with your child. It is great to read the positives in the report on what your child has achieved. It is also important to look for ways to improve and make the most of the educational opportunities. Students are encouraged to set goals for the remainder of the year and continue to focus on their growth.

End of Term Message
Term 2 will finish at 2.30pm on Friday 4 July and Term 3 will begin on Monday 21 July. The Charter Bus schedule will be adjusted for the last day of term to cater for the early finish.

Athletics Carnival

Whole School House Athletics Carnival

Our annual Athletics Carnival was held on Friday, May 30. It is a whole-school event not to be missed. It is about more than just sports and athleticism – although the athletic prowess shown by competitors is always admirable, it is just as impressive to see people just getting up to give something they’ve never tried a go. It is about School Spirit – ‘The Wellington Way’. Caring for each other by cheering from the side-lines, Striving to do our best in each event, and Learning new skills along the way.

Its also a huge social event for the school, allowing different year levels and forms to mingle and get to know each other better outside of a formal classroom setting. Our Year 12s also did not disappoint with their annual dress up for Athletics Day – showing a range of inventive and amusing costumes for their final Athletics Carnival.

Whilst the day was a success for all involved, only one house could walk away as victors. Congratulations to Acacia who narrowly pipped Dianella to the top spot.

Alliance Française French Film Festival

In the last week of school, French students in Year 9 went to the Kino Cinemas located in the CBD of Melbourne for the Alliance Française French Film Festival. French students met up with the teachers at Springvale Station at 8:45 a.m. to catch the train to the city. While walking to the cinemas, students walked in the alleyways of Melbourne and stopped to get waffles and snacks for the movie. After having a little break, we then walked to the Kino Cinemas at Collins Place.

French students watched the film “The Count of Monte Christo”. The film was about a man named Edmond Dantes who got arrested on his wedding day for a crime he never knew about or was involved with. After 14 years in prison on a remote island, he finally escapes. He discovers a mountain of riches with the help of an old cell mate. Eventually, he starts living as the Count of Monte Christo and takes revenge on the people who betrayed him.

French student Kingsley said, “The movie was really cinematic and vibrant” and another student, Bilaal, said “I thought it was unique and had lots of plot twists and was entertaining, eye-catching and the quality was good”. Nearing the end of our amazing day out, students went and had lunch at restaurants that were in Collins Place. Students then met the teachers at the meeting point and then walked to Melbourne Central to eventually take the train back to Springvale to say farewell to an amazing day.

Lam
Year 9

“It was such a great time, and the movie was such a masterpiece.”

Armaan
Year 9

“I really enjoyed it and would love to do it again”

Isabelle
Year 9

“It was super fun and everyone was nice, the movie was very interesting and exciting to watch. I would love to do another French excursion with the class.”

Zara
Year 9

Year 9 French students attended the French Film Festival in city on Collins Street. The students found the excursion and movie to be interesting, exhilarating, as well as a “masterpiece”. Everyone would love the opportunity to have a trip like this again. They learnt about French culture and a bit of French history.

We also expanded on our French vocabulary, due to the movie audio being in French and having English subtitles. Despite that a couple of students found the food to be their highlight of the trip and stated how the chicken nuggets actually “hit the spot”!

Overall, it was an entertaining experience for the whole class and everyone enjoyed the excursion. We would love to do something similar again and are extremely grateful for the sensational day out we had.

Year 9 Offstage Drama Theatre Excursion

Year 9 Offstage drama students travelled to the Lawler Theatre in the city on Wednesday 28 May to see “The Black Women Of Gippsland”, a thought provoking and inspiring piece of theatre.

Students were also inspired by the VCE Top Arts collection at the NGV at federation square.

Performing Arts Camp

On Wednesday May 21 the College saw 140 students embark on the largest performing arts camp to date at Rutherford Park Country Retreat. Students from all year levels were thoroughly engaged over the 3 days, with stunning weather which helped to make the experience great for the students.

Every space was filled with camp goers engaged in a variety of performing arts-related activities – from playing instruments, to dancing, to singing, to acting and even learning a plethora of digital technologies such as sound recording and film making.

I want to give thanks to all of the staff for their hard work in making the camp a wonderful learning experience for the students, who returned tired but happy on Friday May 23.

ResourceSmart Schools Award

On World Environment Day, Mrs Bruna Amaral, Mrs Liz Millsom, Ashley Vaid, Nurali Seyit, Joann Jackson and Terence Pham attended the ResourceSmart Schools Award at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The Cuthbert room was buzzing with excitement, as different generations connected over environmental sustainability achievements across several schools in Victoria. Costa Georgiadis – Australian author, landscape architect, environmental educator and television presenter – was hosting the event and he made it even more special.

Our Sustainability Champions set up the WSC display table and board to showcase the many projects we delivered in 2024 and 2025. They communicated our achievements with great enthusiasm. Those who visited our stand were impressed with the variety of projects organised (e.g. the biodiversity game and the ‘Just Bin It’ and Tree planting videos).

Many people were very curious about Terence’s Waste Voting System model, which he is developing through his studies in VCE Unit 1 System Engineering. After entering the scavenger hunt competition, Terence was selected and won First Prize, which he donated to our College.

The Student Action Award went to Kew High School, and we congratulate them for the fantastic work they have been doing. We left the event filled with positive energy and hopeful that more schools are pushing towards a better future for us all.

Student Feedback – ResourceSmart School Awards

Attending the ResourceSmart Schools event was an incredible experience! We put in so much hard work preparing our showcase and designing displays. It was all worth it when we got to share our ideas and meet so many other passionate students from different schools. Even though it was a bit upsetting not to win, we learnt so much from seeing what others had done and got some great ideas to help improve our own school. I just hope this chance is given to us next year to do our best.

Ashley Vaid
Year 11 | Sustainability Captain

Attending the ResourceSmart Schools Awards Event at the MCG was an inspiring and memorable experience. Being surrounded by students and schools from across Victoria who are passionate about sustainability made me feel proud and hopeful for the future of our environment.

The event showcased a wide range of innovative environmental projects, and it was encouraging to see young people like me being recognised for their efforts to protect the planet. Hearing from guest speakers and seeing the impact of everyone’s hard work reminded me that small actions can indeed lead to significant change.

Overall, it was a fun and eye-opening day that motivated me to continue making sustainable choices in my own life and at Wellington Secondary College.

Nurali Seyit
Year 11 | Sustainability Vice-Captain

It was an honour for me to represent our school at the ResourceSmart Schools Awards. Even though I only joined the group this year, the activities have deeply motivated me. I was eager to acknowledge the club’s past achievements and share them with other like-minded individuals. The awards also provided a great opportunity for us to network and learn new ideas and practices from other schools, which we could potentially implement at our school in the future.

Recycling Paper Boxes

In May, these were placed inside a classroom in M-Block to recycle paper, which will be emptied by selected middle school students on a regular basis. We are planning to have paper recycling boxes in most classrooms, and will be looking at adding similar boxes in the R-block next.

Sustainability Champions used their Built Superpowers to transform photocopier paper boxes into colourful Recycling Boxes.

Save Energy for a Better Future

Year 7 students Lily Vi and Isabella Ngov gave a presentation at the Junior Assembly during World Environment Day. They gave a brief explanation on how the Sustainability Champions started to support our school community to save energy.

The first step was to conduct an Energy Audit, which happened on the 2nd May 2025. The next step is to place posters to remind everyone to switch off, and unplug electrical devices to guarantee a better future for our planet.

What’s On the Menu?

Aidin Omerovic and Maxwell Miller are Year 10 students who always look forward to their Food by Design class with Ms Natalie Hill. They took a photo of their pasta dish sprinkled with fresh parsley grown in our very own Community Garden.

Ms. Osmand’s Food Technology Year 8 class used chives grown from our Community Garden to garnish their bacon and egg muffin.
