Gia Hung (Chris) DOAN
Year 12 2025
Stepping off the plane at Tullamarine Airport, Melbourne, as a nervous 15 year old Year 9 international student from Vietnam, everything felt new and a little scary. But the moment I walked into Wellington Secondary College, that feeling started to fade, and I quickly found myself feeling like I belonged. The teachers here didn’t just teach; they understood the extra hurdles I faced and went the extra mile to help me succeed, both academically and in settling in. I’ve made incredible friends from all corners of the world, and some of those friendships have become long-lasting relationships. It’s the little things – like learning about “Aussie” slang in English Language, participating in leadership activities, and the endless laughter with my friends during and after school – that made Wellington feel like a real community.
I developed skills which were valued and led to positions of International Captain, SRC Captain and currently School Captain. All of these great honours.
Wellington isn’t just a school I attended; it became my Aussie family, supporting me every step of the way and making this incredible journey unforgettable.

Good teachers are essential, however, teachers who understand your strengths and weaknesses are more crucial. I was fortunate to enrol in Wellington Secondary College from Year 9 via their ELC program. With the support of my teachers and our ISC I joined the Accelerated Program which fast tracked my studies. Extra curricular activities helped me to improve my teamwork skills, to communicate better with new people and to develop new friendships. Overall it was a memorable experience which also provided a solid foundation for my tertiary studies.

I would like to share my sincere appreciation and pride in my child’s learning journey at Wellington Secondary College. She joined the school in July 2023 and is currently in year 11.
I’ve been truly impressed by the welcoming, modern, and multicultural environment at the school. The teachers are not only knowledgeable and professional, but also genuinely care about the overall development of every student. My daughter has had many opportunities to take part in extracurricular activities and cultural events, which help her to build confidence, creativity, and valuable life skills.
I also really value the school’s flexible and dedicated teaching style. The teachers are always willing to help students when they need and try their best to create a supportive learning environment where each student can reach their full potential. Moreover, the international program staff have been incredibly supportive in helping my child adjust to a new learning environment, which has truly reassured me while my child is studying far away from home.
Therefore, I’m very delightful that my child has a chance to study at Wellington Secondary College.

As a mother of four, I’ve had three of my children attend this school, my eldest daughter
who graduated last year, and my younger son and daughter who are currently enrolled. I can
confidently say that this multicultural school has been a truly meaningful part of our family’s
journey here in Australia.
From day one, we were welcomed into a supportive and inclusive environment where
different cultures, backgrounds, and traditions are embraced. The school celebrates
different cultures and encourages students to respect and learn from one another, which
has helped my children grow both academically and personally.
My younger daughter has thrived here, especially through her involvement in interschool
activities. These experiences have helped her build confidence, formed new friendships, and
develop a strong sense of belonging. My son, who was once quite shy, has become much
more outgoing and comfortable making friends, which has been such a joy to see.
For my eldest daughter, the school played a key role in preparing her for life after
graduation. The support and guidance she received gave her the confidence and skills she
needed to successfully integrate into university life here in Australia.
This school has provided all three of my children with more than just a quality education,
but a safe and inclusive space to grow into confident, compassionate and respectful
individuals. I’m truly thankful for everything it has offered our family.
