English as an Additional Language (EAL) is offered to students from non-English speaking backgrounds who require assistance with the language requirements of their mainstream classes.  It seeks to promote confidence and proficiency in all areas of English: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Students are taught by dedicated, qualified teachers in small classes of up to 14 students.  Classes contain both local and international students from many parts of the world.  Apart from academic success, students form friendships and learn tolerance and respect for other cultures.

Type of Program

The EAL program at Wellington is diversified to suit the needs of our learners. We have the following structure:

  • Parallel program in Years 9-12.  EAL students study English in classes parallel to mainstream English classes.
  • Elective program in Years 7-10.  The aim of this program is to teach EAL literacy across the curriculum so that the EAL learners can access learning in the different domains.
  • One to one direct instruction in mainstream classes.  This program is facilitated by EAL teachers and Multicultural Aides, who assist students in their mainstream classes.  It caters for EAL learners who have been identified as needing extra support due to their language difficulties.

Eligibility

Wellington Secondary College offers EAL to students in Years 7 to 12 who do not speak English at home.  However, eligibility for VCE is determined by the VCAA and requires students have studied English full-time for less than 7 years.
