International Student Program – The Wellington Way
Hugh with Students

Wellington Secondary College is a large, vibrant multi-cultural government high school that enjoys strong links with other countries. Students are encouraged to become fully involved in the life of the College. Your son or daughter will join a happy group of  international students who are totally integrated into mainstream classes. Our students predominantly come from Vietnam. They will have the opportunity to apply for a College leadership position.

All International students at Wellington choose a comprehensive Year 7 to 10 course or a full Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) program at Years 11-12. Mainstream classes are small (25 students) with a high level of student-teacher interaction to ensure more individual attention. Your son or daughter will enjoy the benefits of extensive curriculum and co-curriculum programs in a supportive 21st Century learning environment that includes the following: accelerated learning by the early commencement of VCE or university subjects; challenging Sport, Music and Drama activities.  There is also an Intensive English Language Centre (WIELC) on site in our dedicated International Centre. Newly arrived international students are taught English before they transition into mainstream classes.

Students are able to study their first language as part of their VCE course. Students can choose to enrol at the Victorian School of Languages or at a registered third party provider such as Hoa Nghiem Vietnamese Language School or Xin Jin Shan Chinese Language and Culture School. Classes are held outside of normal school hours.

Wellington Secondary College Special Entry Requirements:

  • Minimum grade of 80% in English, Maths, Physics and Chemistry
  • Visual interview via skype / wechat / viber to assess English language proficiency, OR
  • IELTS – a minimum of 5 in each individual band and an overall test score of at least 5.5

Students under 15 years of age will only be considered if they live with a parent or a DHA approved relative. We generally only accept students entering Year 10 or higher.

The International Students Program is an integral part of the College. We are proud of our cultural diversity and ensure that all our students’ multiculturally rich backgrounds are recognised, catered for, celebrated and valued.
