EAL (English as an Additional Language)
English as an Additional Language (EAL) is offered to students from non-English speaking backgrounds who require assistance with the language requirements of their mainstream classes. It seeks to promote confidence and proficiency in all areas of English including reading, writing, speaking and listening.
The EAL program at Wellington is diversified to suit the needs of our learners. We have the following structure:
- A parallel program in Years 7-12 where eligible EAL students study English in classes parallel to mainstream English classes.
- An elective program in Years 9 and 10 with the aim of teaching EAL literacy across the curriculum so that EAL learners can access learning in all learning areas.
- Personalised instruction in mainstream classes facilitated by EAL teachers and Multicultural Aides who assist students. This caters for EAL learners who have been identified as needing extra support due to challenges with the English language
Eligibility
Eligibility for VCE EAL is determined by the VCAA and requires students to have studied English full-time for less than seven years.
